President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Gondar, a historic city in Ethiopia, for an official visit at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali.
The visit, which highlights the growing relations between Ghana and Ethiopia, comes ahead of the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, scheduled to take place in Bahir Dar.
Upon arriving at Gondar Airport on Friday, October 23, 2026, President Mahama joined Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to commission the Megech Irrigation Development Project, a major dam and reservoir initiative aimed at improving agricultural production and water supply in the region.
The project, which began 18 years ago, experienced prolonged delays before Prime Minister Abiy revived it three years ago to facilitate its completion.

Covering 870 hectares and with a storage capacity of 185 million cubic metres, the Megech Dam is expected to deliver significant socio-economic benefits to the region.
The facility is designed to provide irrigation for 17,000 hectares of farmland, boosting agricultural output and strengthening food security.
It will also supply clean drinking water to Gondar and neighbouring satellite towns, improving access to potable water for residents.
Addressing the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama praised the Ethiopian government and its people for their determination and resilience in completing the major infrastructure project, which he said would benefit generations to come.
President Mahama is expected to travel to Bahir Dar on Saturday, October 24, 2026, to chair the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa.
The forum will bring together African leaders, policymakers and security experts to deliberate on key peace, governance and security challenges facing the continent.
