The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its earlier decision to organise the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years, reinstating the tournament’s traditional two-year schedule.
In a post on X, CAF announced that its Executive Committee had unanimously approved the return to the biennial format.
The statement said the decision was reached during a meeting of the Executive Committee, which agreed that the continental competition should once again be held every two years.
The move follows an announcement by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cabo Verde, held from October 7 to 9, 2026.
During the conference, Dr Motsepe indicated that the Executive Committee would reconsider its previous decision to change AFCON to a four-year cycle.
The latest unanimous decision effectively overturns that arrangement and restores the competition’s two-year schedule.
However, CAF has not yet indicated which edition of the tournament will mark the beginning of the reinstated biennial cycle.
