The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is scheduled to hold a demonstration today, Tuesday, November 3, to protest alleged corruption, lack of transparency and what it describes as the government’s failure to honour key campaign promises made to Ghanaians.
The protest, dubbed the “Yegyeyɛ Sika Demo,” is expected to attract party members and supporters, particularly young people, who intend to demand accountability from the government on several national issues.
A key concern of the demonstration is the need for transparency regarding the government’s recent evacuation exercise in South Africa. The NPP youth wing is demanding a detailed breakdown of the funds reportedly allocated to the operation.
The protesters are also expected to raise concerns about the management of public resources and what they describe as inconsistencies in the government’s handling of financial matters.
The youth wing said the demonstration is part of its efforts to hold the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration accountable and ensure that public officials are transparent in carrying out their duties.
Speaking to Citi News ahead of the protest, NPP Volta Regional Youth Organiser Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu urged young Ghanaians to join the demonstration, arguing that citizens should not remain silent when concerns arise over the use of public funds.
He said the NPP youth wing, acting as a responsible Minority, was leading calls for Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to account to Ghanaians for the GH¢49.7 million reportedly allocated to the evacuation exercise.
Mr Amekplenu questioned whether the amount involved any transposition or accounting errors during the reconciliation of the funds, insisting that the public deserved a clear explanation of the money’s status.
