A 29-year-old tricycle operator, Naah Mashood, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a three-year-old girl at Tiegber in the Wa Municipality.
The Upper West Regional Police Command said Mashood was arrested on February 24, 2026, by officers of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVSU) after the victim’s mother reported the incident.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, the police disclosed that the convict had been engaged by the child’s parents to transport her to and from school.
However, on February 23, 2026, he allegedly took the girl to an isolated location, where he sexually assaulted her inside his tricycle, popularly known as a Cambuu.
Following investigations, Mashood was initially arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court before the case proceeded to the Wa High Court for trial.
After a full trial, he was found guilty of defilement and sentenced on October 30, 2026, by Justice Osei-Wusu to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the officers who handled the investigation and prosecution, as well as others who contributed to securing the conviction.
The Command also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to protect children from abuse.
It further encouraged the public to report suspected cases of child abuse and defilement to the nearest police station or DOVSU office for prompt investigation and action.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences are brought to justice.
