Police in the Ashanti Region are pursuing several suspects who escaped an operation targeting an alleged motorcycle gang accused of carrying out robberies and disrupting public roads in parts of Kumasi.
Three men, Sharif Mahmud, 23, Abdallah Karim, 25, and James Alena, 25, were arrested at Suame at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, according to the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
The arrests followed what police described as sustained efforts to track the group, whose alleged activities have been reported within the Breman-Kronum-Suame enclave.
Investigators accuse the suspects and other members of the group of organising illegal motorcycle races at night, taking over public roads and attacking and robbing people passing through the area.
The police said they had monitored the suspects’ movements after previous attempts to arrest them were unsuccessful. Several other alleged members reportedly escaped during the latest operation, prompting a search for the remaining suspects.
The three arrested men have been granted police inquiry bail. They are expected to appear before court when proceedings resume following the ongoing strike by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG).
The nationwide strike, which began on November 2, has disrupted court operations, although the Judicial Service has indicated that efforts are underway to resolve the dispute and restore normal services.
Police have appealed to residents to provide credible information that could help identify and locate those still at large. Investigations into the alleged activities of the group are continuing.
