Strong winds have uprooted the historic tree believed to have been planted by legendary priest Okomfo Anokye at Agona in the Ashanti Region.
The tree, which historians estimate to be about 330 years old, fell on Tuesday after strong winds swept through the community.
Videos circulating on social media showed the tree lying upside down, with its roots pointing towards the sky and its branches facing the ground.
The Onton tree is believed to have been planted by Okomfo Anokye around 1690 as a powerful spiritual symbol of the Asante Kingdom.
Graphic Online reports that some residents of Agona have interpreted the unusual manner in which the tree fell as a possible spiritual sign.
