A cholera outbreak in the Ada enclave has claimed the lives of two people, with 43 cases confirmed so far, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The outbreak has impacted the Greater Accra Region’s Ada East and Ada West regions, prompting health officials to move quickly to contain the crisis and stop additional deaths.
Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Frank Bekoe, confirmed the figures stating that “ we have 37 confirmed cases from Ada East, and then six confirmed cases in Ada West. Since the outbreak started, we have had two mortalities’.
Dr. Bekoe highlighted that health authorities are actively monitoring the situation, with a focus on early detection of new cases and tracing afflicted individuals’ contacts in order to minimize the disease’s spread.
‘Measures are underway to treat the cases and keep the outbreak from spreading’ he said.
Cholera is a highly contagious disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria that is spread by contaminated food and water.
It frequently flourishes in places with inadequate access to clean drinking water and poor sanitation.
If left untreated, cholera’s symptoms which include severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration can result in death.
