Deputy Transport Minister Hassan Tampuli has described Ghana’s first batch of electric buses as a transformative step towards modernizing the country’s urban transport system and improving traffic management in Accra.
Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, November 28, Mr. Tampuli explained that the initiative aligns with the government’s bigger plan to improve public transportation, as outlined in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 manifesto.
The fleet was inaugurated at a ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, November 27, officiated by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The buses form part of a pilot project under the government’s proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, designed to provide cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions for densely populated cities.
Dr. Bawumia praised the initiative as a significant milestone, emphasizing its potential to alleviate traffic congestion while reducing environmental pollution.
Addressing concerns that the project could be a political move ahead of the December elections, Mr. Tampuli clarified that it is part of a comprehensive transport plan.
“This is a pilot phase to test efficiency,” he said. “As the system expands, dedicated lanes will be introduced on major roads, which may require road reconfiguration.” He added.
The electric buses mark a step forward in Ghana’s journey toward sustainable urban transportation and traffic minimization.
