In a significant governance reform, President John Dramani Mahama has reduced the number of government ministries from 30 to 23. This decision, formalized in an Executive Instrument dated January 9, 2025, aims to enhance efficiency and lower operational costs.
The restructuring aligns with President Mahama’s campaign commitment to establish a leaner government. He pledged to cap the number of ministries at 23, ensuring a more focused and accountable administration while promoting cost-efficiency.
As part of the changes, several ministries have been merged to improve public service delivery and reduce administrative overheads. The President utilized his authority under section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L. 327), which allows for structural adjustments to enhance civil service efficiency.
This initiative is a response to long-standing calls for reducing government size and expenditure. It is also part of a broader strategy to optimize resource allocation and foster better coordination among ministries.
Details of the restructured ministries and appointments are expected to be announced soon, marking a new chapter in Ghana’s governance framework under President Mahama’s leadership.
