The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced measures to address the recent petrol shortages affecting the northern regions of Ghana. The shortages have disrupted transportation and daily activities in areas such as Yendi, Damongo, and parts of the Oti Region.
In a press release issued on 10th January 2025, the NPA outlined the steps being taken to resolve the issue. The authority has granted Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) special permissions to load petrol from the Bulk Energy Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) depot in Kumasi to supply retail outlets across the five northern regions. Additional petrol loads from depots in Tema will also supplement supplies from Kumasi to ensure adequate coverage in the affected areas.
Furthermore, arrangements are underway to transfer nine million liters of petrol via the Buipe-Bolgatanga pipeline into storage at the Bolgatanga depot, providing immediate relief to the northern regions.
These interventions are being implemented simultaneously to ensure a swift resolution of the crisis. The NPA has reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm, urging consumers to go about their activities without resorting to panic buying.
The authority emphasized that Ghana has adequate fuel stocks, with vessels lined up to discharge additional supplies into the country. These measures are expected to restore normalcy and meet the fuel needs of residents and businesses in the affected regions.
