President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into a violent altercation at AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mining site, which left eight individuals, reportedly illegal miners, dead.
In a statement issued on Sunday, January 19, 2025, the President expressed deep sorrow over the incident and stressed the need for a thorough probe to uncover the events leading to the fatalities. He assured the public that any persons found culpable would face the full force of the law.
According to reports, approximately 60 illegal miners, armed with rifles and other weapons, breached the mine’s security fence late on Saturday night. A confrontation ensued between the miners and the military patrol team stationed at the site, resulting in the deaths of seven miners and leaving others injured. One soldier also sustained injuries during the exchange.
President Mahama has instructed AngloGold Ashanti to cover medical expenses for the injured and assist with burial arrangements for the deceased. He further tasked security agencies to restore calm in the area and take measures to prevent future incidents.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, with disturbing videos circulating on social media showing chaotic scenes, heavy smoke, and bodies at the site. The government has assured the public of a transparent investigation to bring closure and accountability.
