The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has dismissed allegations suggesting that its staff were responsible for a fire at a residential facility in Two-Streams, a suburb of Koforidua, following a disconnection operation.
The company described the claims as unfounded and urged the public to disregard them.
In a statement issued by Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager of External Communications for ECG, it was clarified that the incident involved a customer with an outstanding debt of GH¢6,519.38 since September 2024.
As part of an ongoing revenue mobilization initiative dubbed “Operation Keep the Lights On,” ECG personnel visited the customer’s premises on January 24, 2025. Upon arrival, they discovered an illegal self-reconnection and proceeded to disconnect the facility due to this violation.
The disconnection process reportedly faced resistance from the customer, who allegedly threatened the ECG staff with a machete. Consequently, the team sought police assistance to ensure their safety while completing the disconnection.
The disconnection was executed directly from the pole outside the premises, and reports indicate that the fire outbreak occurred later that same day, well after the ECG personnel had left the site.
In its statement, ECG asserted that disconnecting power from the pole is standard procedure and does not cause fire outbreaks.
“ECG wishes to state categorically that disconnection of power supply directly from a pole totally curtails electricity supply to the affected premises and CANNOT, by any means, result in a fire outbreak. Thus, the customer’s allegation against ECG is completely false. Disconnection has been part of our operations, backed by law, to ensure that recalcitrant customers pay for the electricity they consume,” the statement elaborated.
The company also reassured the public of its dedication to safety and professionalism, emphasizing that it would never undertake actions that could endanger the lives or property of its customers.
As a precautionary measure, ECG urged customers to settle their electricity bills promptly and avoid illegal connections.
