The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that results withheld from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be released by February 28, 2025.
The decision follows ongoing investigations into cases of examination malpractice. WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, assured that due process is being followed and urged affected students and parents to remain patient.
Meanwhile, WAEC has filed a stay of execution against a court ruling that ordered the release of some withheld results. The appeal hearing is set for February 20, 2025.
During the 2024 WASSCE, WAEC recorded multiple irregularities, including the use of foreign materials, mobile phones, and assistance from invigilators. As a result:
- 4,108 candidates had subject results canceled.
- 483 candidates lost their entire results.
- 781 candidates’ subject results and 209 candidates’ entire results remain withheld.
- Results from 319 schools are under investigation.
WAEC has assured the public that its review process is thorough and fair. It has called on all stakeholders to support efforts to eliminate examination malpractice and protect the credibility of the country’s education system.
