The Foreign Affairs Ministry is taking steps to resolve the issue of over 75,000 unclaimed passports, with plans to introduce a courier service that will deliver them directly to applicants.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this initiative, emphasizing the need for a more efficient distribution system. “We will roll out a courier system so that applicants can receive their passports wherever they are. There must be a clear indication of who the applicants are, and if addresses are available, we will call them,” he said.
To ensure that these unclaimed passports reach their rightful owners, an immediate audit will be conducted to identify applicants and streamline the distribution process. The move is part of a broader effort to digitize and modernize passport operations, improving efficiency and reducing delays.
Beyond passport distribution, the ministry is also set to tighten regulations surrounding diplomatic passports. Ablakwa revealed that a major review of the issuance process is in the pipeline to curb misuse and uphold Ghana’s international reputation.
“There has been abuse. Diplomatic passports should not just be available to anyone. We need to streamline the process to protect our national security and international image,” he stated.
He referenced existing laws, including NLC Decree 155, which clearly defines who qualifies for a diplomatic passport, and stressed the importance of enforcing these regulations. “The way we are treated at embassies and airports depends on the credibility of our passports. We must restore their respect,” he added.
