The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans to introduce a bill in Parliament to revert public universities to their original names.
Announcing this at the inauguration of the Dr Abdulai Salifu Technical University Governing Council in Accra, he explained that the bill is intended to restore the institutions’ identities while respecting previous honorees.
“This is a policy shift, there will be changes in the names of the universities that were done. It is not to fail to recognise the contribution of any individuals or undermine the legacy of any statesman or diminish their contributions to our national effort,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
According to Graphic, he assured that deserving honorees would retain their recognition. Institutions like Dr Abdulai Salifu Technical University will revert to Tamale Technical University, alongside similar changes for others, including C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Science.
The minister also urged the council to resolve ongoing conflicts at Tamale Technical University, calling for the institution to reclaim its prominence in engineering, technology, and vocational education.
Linking education to economic growth, he emphasized the role of technical universities in achieving a private-sector-led 24-hour economy and announced plans for investments through GETFund to improve infrastructure.
The council, chaired by Mandori Wura Alhaji Seidu Iddi, includes members like Vice-Chancellor Professor Bashiru Imoro Ibn Saeed and presidential appointees, who are tasked with repositioning the institution for excellence.
