Michael Kpakpo Allotey has been given a unanimous nod as the new Mayor of Accra, receiving all 30 valid votes during a special assembly meeting at the Accra City Hall on Tuesday. The vote, supervised by the Electoral Commission, reflected a rare consensus among the Assembly Members and marked a resounding endorsement of his leadership.
The confirmation ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, party officials, residents, and government appointees, with excitement in the air as drumming and cheers erupted following the announcement.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who oversaw the process, urged members of the Assembly to rise above partisanship. “This is the heart of the capital,” she said, calling for renewed focus on development and unity in support of the President’s nominee.
In his first official remarks, Mr. Allotey expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for entrusting him with the leadership of the capital. “I’m just a young man from North Kaneshie, and to be called to serve in this capacity is not something I take for granted,” he said.
He acknowledged the work of past mayors, emphasizing that the baton had been passed to him to continue Accra’s transformation. “We are going to reset Accra, starting now,” he said. “My predecessor has played her part, and now, it’s my time. There is no room for failure.”
His message was not only one of continuity, but also ambition. “What God cannot do does not exist,” he added, drawing inspiration from his faith and the President’s broader development agenda.
Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, a respected traditional ruler and a Council of State member, challenged the incoming Mayor to lead with discipline and empathy. He noted sanitation, urban congestion, youth unemployment, and housing as major issues that need urgent and innovative solutions.
Before his nomination, Mr. Allotey worked extensively in the private sector, including real estate, logistics, and petroleum. He previously served as CEO of Our God Is Good Real Estate, and held key roles at EXOLUBE Company Ltd, KYG Consultancy, and DIMD Ghana, where he led efficiency-driven reforms.
He is also deeply rooted in politics, having served the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in various roles, including as Director of Operations for the Okaikwei South Constituency.
With his blend of public service, private sector experience, and party activism, many see Mr. Allotey as a dynamic addition to President Mahama’s team, expected to bring fresh energy to Accra’s development.
