Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has waded into the debate surrounding the ongoing process to remove the Chief Justice, firmly defending the President’s role in the matter.
Speaking in a recent public engagement captured in a JoyNews video, Justice Atuguba questioned the sudden uproar over the process, pointing out that the same constitutional provisions had been applied in past high-profile cases.
“Why the sudden claim of unfairness? The same provision was applied in the cases of the former EC Chair and CHRAJ boss. The President did not act in error,” he stated.
His comments come amid growing concerns from sections of the public and legal community over what they describe as a politically motivated move against the current Chief Justice. Critics argue that the process lacks transparency and undermines judicial independence.
However, Justice Atuguba’s remarks suggest otherwise, pointing to precedent and constitutional consistency. The retired judge, known for his forthright views on legal and constitutional matters, did not delve into the merits of the current case, but maintained that the procedure being followed is grounded in law.
