The family of a 15-year-old boy, Simon Obeng, is demanding answers after he reportedly died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.
Simon was arrested on Thursday, June 5, by the Tarkwa Simpa Police after his employer accused him of stealing gold. According to the family, police refused to grant him bail that evening, citing that it was late.
However, on Sunday, police informed the family that Simon had died by suicide while in custody. Officers claim he hanged himself in the cell.
The sudden death of the teenager has left the family devastated and questioning the official account of events. They say they were not given clear information on the condition under which Simon was being held and are calling for a thorough investigation into what they believe is a suspicious death.
At the time of this report, police have not issued a detailed public statement or confirmed whether an independent investigation will be conducted.
The incident has sparked grief and outrage in the Tarkwa Simpa community, with many joining the family in calling for transparency and accountability.
