Ghana is seeking Russia’s help to secure broader backing for its application to join BRICS as a partner country, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pledging to engage the bloc’s founding members on the proposal.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development following a breakfast meeting with Lavrov and other African foreign ministers at the ongoing Russia-Africa Summit.
Ablakwa said Moscow had committed to building consensus among the founding members in support of Ghana’s application.
The country announced its intention to pursue partner-country status on October 6, 2026, after Cabinet approval. Ablakwa made the announcement during a joint press briefing in Accra with India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
The move forms part of the government’s efforts to expand Ghana’s economic and diplomatic relationships and explore additional avenues for international cooperation.
Ablakwa said the administration would continue to follow Ghana’s non-aligned foreign policy, guided by the principle of being “friends of all, enemies to none”.
BRICS is a grouping of emerging economies that promotes cooperation on economic and international issues. Its partner-country framework allows eligible countries to engage more closely with the bloc without becoming full members.
Russia’s pledge marks a diplomatic step in Ghana’s bid, although the application will require wider support from the other countries involved.
