The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will take legal action to stop the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
This comes after the EC declared that elections would be rerun in the selected polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025, to resolve lingering disputes over the 2024 parliamentary results.
At a press conference in Accra, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, described the EC’s decision as a sudden shift from its earlier position, where it acknowledged that results from only three polling stations were outstanding.
According to him, the party’s records confirm that the three stations yet to be collated are Pentecost Church Tweneboa 2, Light of Gospel Miracle Chapel, and Gloryland Hotel. He insisted that anything beyond these would be unacceptable to the party.
Frimpong argued that the EC has no legal authority under C.I. 127 to order a rerun unless instructed by a court of competent jurisdiction. He expressed concerns that the EC’s decision, if allowed to proceed, could undermine electoral integrity and set a bad precedent.
The EC’s directive followed a meeting with representatives of the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The EC explained that the rerun was necessary because results from 19 polling stations had been compromised. It noted that the scanned pink sheets used during collation for those stations had not been verified by the presiding officers due to damage to the original documents.
While the NDC had initially called for a rerun in 37 polling stations, the EC settled on 19 after internal assessments. The NPP, however, maintains that the results from the remaining three polling stations should simply be collated and added to the already available data.
The party has instructed its lawyers to seek an injunction from the courts to prevent the EC from proceeding with the planned rerun.
As the legal challenge unfolds, tension continues to build around the final outcome of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.
