Professor Ransford Gyampo has spoken out on the violent incident that disrupted the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, stating that former MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, should not have been allowed near the Odorkor Methodist polling station due to her controversial political history.
According to the University of Ghana Political Science professor, Koomson’s presence at the polling station may have heightened tensions and triggered the chaos that unfolded. Although he condemned the assault on her, he stressed the need for political figures to act responsibly to avoid unnecessary conflict.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, July 12, Prof Gyampo said, “Hawa Koomson shouldn’t have been allowed to go near the voting centre because she has a past history. I, however, condemn the violence against her. Regardless of her action, two wrongs don’t make a right. We cannot take the laws into our own hands because we are angry; otherwise, we’ll be perpetuating the bad cycle.”
The incident occurred during the rerun in 19 polling stations across the constituency, aimed at breaking a seven-month deadlock over the area’s parliamentary seat. The Odorkor Methodist polling station was briefly thrown into chaos after some unidentified individuals stormed the venue and allegedly assaulted Hawa Koomson, leading to a temporary suspension of voting.
