Hon. Sammi Awuku, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem-North constituency, explains the reason behind the minority caucus’s decision to stage a walkout during the swearing-in ceremony of the MP for Ablekuma
According to him, the minority staged a walk out on Ewarabena Aubynn’s swearing -in because of the violence that happened at the Ablekuma North during the rerun election.
“Speaking on Adom TV’s Adekye Nsroma July 23,2025, monitored by nsem360.com, Sammi Awuku, said “We the NPP believe that Ewurabena Aubynn has become a beneficiary of a bloody contest”
The Ablekuma North by-election rerun, held earlier this month, followed a court ruling that annulled the original 2024 parliamentary results over alleged irregularities. However, the rerun itself was not without controversy, as reports of clashes between party supporters and allegations of voter suppression emerged from several polling stations.
Despite these concerns, the Electoral Commission declared Ewurabena Aubynn, who ran on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the winner of the closely watched contest.
The swearing-in ceremony proceeded in the presence of the majority Caucus and some government officials. Ewurabena Aubynn, who becomes the first female MP for the constituency, was officially sworn into office by the Speaker of Parliament. In her brief remarks, she thanked her constituents and pledged to work for unity and development in Ablekuma North.
Meanwhile, the Minority Caucus has hinted at taking further steps, including possibly challenging the legitimacy of the election results in court. The political tensions surrounding the Ablekuma North seat highlight ongoing concerns about electoral violence and democratic credibility in Ghana’s parliamentary processes
