The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region for Tuesday, September 2, 2025. The election follows the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, the Commission confirmed that the seat has officially been declared vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.
Nominations Open
The EC announced that it will open nominations for individuals interested in contesting the vacant seat.
“Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) beginning July 30, 2025, until August 13, 2025,” the statement said.
Submission of Forms
Nomination forms must be submitted between August 11 and August 13, 2025, at the Denkyembour District Office. Submission times are from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
Prospective candidates are required to submit the forms either in person or through their proposer or seconder. Each form must be endorsed by a proposer and a seconder, both of whom must be registered voters in the constituency, along with 18 additional registered voters as supporters.
Candidates must also attach two recent passport-sized photographs (full face with ears visible, taken against a red background).
Filing Fees
The filing fee is GH¢10,000 per candidate. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will enjoy a discounted rate of GH¢7,500.
The by-election is expected to attract significant attention as political parties gear up to contest the seat left vacant by the late Ernest Kumi.
