Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, has raised concerns over the government’s approach to tax policy, accusing it of concealing certain levies in official budget documents.
According to him, some taxes were not explicitly listed under revenue measures but were instead disguised through technical language, such as extending sunset clauses.
Speaking at a press conference on July 29 monitored by Nsem 360, the MP said this lack of transparency makes it difficult for citizens and analysts to fully understand the tax burden being placed on the public.
“Sometimes because they hide the taxes, alot of people don’t catch to it quickly, Ghanaians don’t have electricity to run their business, we need to run businesses in gen set and do you know how much cost”
He stated that in the original budget presented by the government, key details about new taxes were omitted, potentially misleading the public about the true scope of fiscal changes.
He also revealed that within a span of just six months, the government has introduced at least eight new taxes, and when combined with recent tariff increases, the total rises to around ten. The MP emphasized the need for clearer communication and more accountability in how tax policies are presented and implemented.
