Effia Member of Parliament, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has accused sections of the Ghanaian media of being complicit in the rising spate of assaults against journalists by remaining silent due to political favors and appointments.
According to him, “because journalists are being given political appointments, you’ve become beneficiaries of the government and that is why you’re being silent on your own people,” he stated. “The media is being bought, and you are allowing yourselves to be bought.”
Speaking passionately on ChannelOne TV’s Breakfast Daily show, the MP said journalists have become “beneficiaries of government,” which has compromised their ability to demand justice for their colleagues who have been attacked.
His comments follow recent public outrage over the military assault on a Joy News reporter during coverage of a controversial demolition exercise at the McDan warehouse.
The MP lamented what he described as the media’s “dangerous decline,” citing 13 clear cases of journalist assaults since February 2025, for which there has been little to no accountability.
“Why would the media allow itself to sink to this level where you have 13 cases of assault against your own and you don’t do anything about it?” he asked. “This discussion alone is not enough.”
He called on journalists and media organizations to rise above political affiliations and fight to defend their profession.
“The media must stand up, defend itself, go to government, demand accountability, and ensure pragmatic actions are taken. Enough of the condemnations. Where are the updates? Where are the sanctions?” he stressed.
Boamah-Nyarko issued a bold demand to government: provide a detailed update on all 13 incidents of journalist assault within 48 hours.
