Dr. Seidu Fiter, a lecturer at the University for Development Studies and a well-known communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has officially declared his intention to contest the upcoming Tamale Central by-election.
The by-election, scheduled for September 30, 2025, follows the tragic passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who died in a military helicopter crash on August 6 alongside other government officials.
Dr. Fiter said his decision to contest is rooted in both public service and loyalty to his late mentor. He recalled his first meeting with Dr. Murtala in 2011 and noted that the late legislator played a pivotal role in shaping his political and professional life.
Beyond his academic career, Dr. Fiter has built a reputation as a strong voice for the NDC, frequently appearing on national media platforms to represent the party. He currently serves on the party’s Northern Regional Communications Team, where he is recognized for his clarity, consistency, and grassroots engagement.
His declaration has stirred excitement among sections of the NDC, with many viewing him as a natural successor to the late MP. Analysts also consider him one of the frontrunners in the upcoming contest, citing his academic background, communication skills, and strong ties within the party.
The Electoral Commission has opened nominations from September 8 to 10, with candidates expected to submit their forms at the EC’s Tamale office. The by-election is expected to be closely watched as Tamale Central navigates the loss of its MP while looking ahead to new representation.
