Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene
International investigators have arrived in the Ashanti Region to assist with inquiries into the August 6 military helicopter crash that killed Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene confirmed their arrival and said they have been directed to work with key stakeholders. He expressed confidence that the joint efforts of local and international teams will establish the cause of the crash and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to CitiNewsroom, Dr. Amoakohene also supported the Inspector General of Police’s decision to withdraw the task force that had been enforcing environmental regulations in mining communities.
He noted that while the task force was effective in its operations, it often sidelined Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), regional ministers, and traditional leaders.
“Security management cannot be centralised,” he said, stressing that lasting results in the fight against illegal mining require stronger collaboration with local authorities and communities.
The Minister added that upcoming reforms will integrate community structures more closely into the campaign against illegal mining, giving residents a greater role in protecting the environment.
