President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.
The decision was taken in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, following the submission of a report by a committee established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by Mr. Daniel Ofori, a Ghanaian citizen.
According to the report, the Committee, after reviewing testimonies and extensive evidence, concluded that grounds of stated misbehavior under Article 146(1) had been established against the Chief Justice.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 1, 2025, Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said President Mahama, acting on the binding recommendation of the Committee, had directed the removal of the Chief Justice from office with immediate effect.
Justice Torkonoo, who was appointed Chief Justice in June 2023, becomes the second head of Ghana’s Judiciary to be removed under constitutional provisions relating to stated misbehaviour.
