The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has been petitioned to investigate former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over alleged corruption, illicit enrichment and possible breaches of Ghana’s political financing laws.
The complaint, dated 15 September 2025, was submitted by Solomon Owusu with legal representation from Andrew Appiah-Danquah and Edwin Godwin Buckman.
It cites Dr Bawumia’s own public comments in which he claimed to have personally acquired more than 300 pickup vehicles for the New Patriotic Party and raised record sums for political campaigns.
The petitioners argue that these statements raise legitimate questions about the source of the funds, the legality of the transactions and whether state resources or illicit financing may have been involved. They warn of potential conflicts of interest and possible abuse of public office.
They are asking the OSP to investigate the origin of the funds, conduct a forensic audit of the purchases and require Dr Bawumia to make a sworn declaration of the amounts spent and their sources.
The petition cites the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act 2017, the Political Parties Act 2000, the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2020, the Criminal Offences Act 1960 and the Public Financial Management Act 2016 as the basis for jurisdiction.
“The Office of the Special Prosecutor was created to protect the Republic from precisely this type of suspected high-level corruption,” the petition concludes.
