The total number of mobile money transactions in Ghana has recorded a 14.7% growth, climbing from 724 million August in 2024 to a record 831 million in August 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data report for September 2025.
The data reveals a relatively sustained growth in the mobile money ecosystem over the past year. Registered accounts climbed steadily from 70.5 million to 77.7 million, a 10.2% increase between August 2024 and August 2025, while active accounts (those used at least once in the previous 90 days) showed more modest growth, stabilizing around 25.1 million, a 2.8% month-on-month growth from the 24.4 million recorded at the end of July this year.
The value of mobile money transactions also saw a significant 29% growth, climbing from GHC273.6 billion in August 2024 to GHC354.1 billion in August 2025. However, it recorded a GHC1.3 billion (0.4%) drop in month-on-month value between July and August 2025.
For mobile money interoperability (allowing seamless transfers between different providers and bank accounts), the data revealed that the value of interoperable transactions saw a significant growth, shooting up from GHC 2.5 billion in August 2024 to a record GHC 4.9 billion in August 2025.
Transaction volumes also grew, hitting 26.4 million in August 2025, up from the 18.4 million recorded in August 2024. Balance held within the mobile money system (float) saw a steady growth, increasing from GHC 22.2 billion to GHC 28.4 billion over the year. However, the GHC28.4 billion recorded in August shows a 3.7% decrease in month-on-month growth against July’s GHC29.5 billion.
The report further highlighted that the number of registered agent numbers increased by 75,000 over the 12-month period, rising from 863,000 in August 2024 to 938,000 in August 2025. However, the number of active agents dropped by 90,000, from 523,000 in August 2024, to 433,000 at the end of August 2025, representing a 3% decline in month-on-month growth against the 446,000 recorded in July 2025.
The value of cheque transactions between the 12-month period saw modest growth, with the total value of clearances reaching GHC33.0 billion in August 2025, up from the GHC30.2 billion cleared as at August 2024. The volume of transactions also grew, pegging at 443,000, up from the 433,000 recorded in August 2024.
Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions showed mixed signals. Direct Debit values grew from GHC237.9 million in August 2024, to GHC252.0 million in August 2025, but transaction volumes saw a 28% dip, from 64,000 in August 2024, to 46,000 at the end of August 2025.
Direct Credit also recorded growths in both value and volume, recording an 18% increase in value from GHC9.0 billion in August 2024, to GHC10.7 billion as of August 2025, with transaction volumes also increasing from 775,000 to 777,000 in between August 2024 and 2025.
