The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Robert Amesiya, has urged closer collaboration with the media to boost public awareness and improve health outcomes.
He explained that although efforts such as community nursing, home visits, and public health initiatives are ongoing, many people are still not benefiting fully due to shortcomings in how health information is communicated.
Dr. Amesiya pointed out that the region’s large, diverse, and highly urbanised population makes it difficult to effectively deliver and interpret health messages, underscoring the importance of media involvement.
He made these remarks during a media engagement programme organised by Jhpiego in partnership with the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
The programme brought together key health stakeholders and media professionals to design a one-year action plan aimed at improving health promotion.
Also speaking at the event, Jhpiego Country Director Dr. Pearl Nanka-Bruce said the organisation prioritises supporting government health initiatives rather than working independently.
She noted that Jhpiego collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to identify national health priorities, shape policies and strategies, and assist with implementation at healthcare facilities.
According to her, the organisation’s work includes building the capacity of health workers, supplying equipment and technical assistance, and monitoring ongoing activities within the health sector.
Dr. Nanka-Bruce added that Jhpiego, which has been operating since 1978, often works behind the scenes to strengthen government systems without seeking significant public attention.
