The Ghana Police Service has temporarily closed the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all personnel following violent attacks by local youth on September 21, 2025.
The unrest erupted at approximately 7:00 AM on Sunday, when some youth attacked the police station with stones, clubs, and other weapons, attempting to set the building ablaze following the death of a suspect in police custody.
According to a statement issued by the Eastern Regional Police Command on Sunday, September 21, the violence was triggered by the death of one Bright Kena, also known as D-ball, who had been arrested on charges of unlawful entry and stealing. Police reports indicated that Kena was receiving medical treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital at the time of his death.
The statement further highlighted that the attackers targeted both the police station and the adjacent barracks, prompting the Inspector-General of Police to order the immediate withdrawal of all officers stationed at Kukurantumi and the temporary closure of the facility.
A police reinforcement team was subsequently deployed to the scene and successfully restored calm and order to the area. The Eastern Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding both the suspect’s death and the subsequent attacks on the station.
“The Eastern Regional Police Command has engaged the deceased’s family and other community leaders and assured them of a thorough investigation into the matter,” the release stated, adding that the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department have commenced joint investigations into the incident.
The statement indicated that authorities are currently reviewing video footage of the attack, assuring that the perpetrators shall be identified and brought to justice.
