Presidential aspirant and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised former President John Mahama for what he described as double standards in explaining Ghana’s economic challenges.
Speaking during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia recalled that the NPP government had consistently attributed the 2022 downturn to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine war.
He noted that Mahama dismissed this explanation during the 2024 election campaign, blaming economic mismanagement instead.
“I have read that President Mahama, in an address in New York, admitted that prices of goods and services increased in Africa because of the economic challenges, and that over a decade of poverty reduction efforts were thwarted by the two-year pandemic. This shows he knew the truth, but he didn’t say the same during the election period,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The former Vice President argued that unlike the NDC, the NPP had been transparent about the real causes of the crisis.
He further expressed confidence that Ghanaians would acknowledge this in 2028 and vote to keep the NPP in power.
“By God’s grace, we will all see the truth, and I believe the NPP will be voted for in 2028 to bring economic development,” he added.
