Former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS)
The High Court in Accra has postponed proceedings in the ongoing trial of former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Gifty Oware-Mensah, following reports of ill health. Her legal team submitted a medical excuse covering two days, prompting the court to adjourn the session that was scheduled for today.
This latest development delays the continuation of a case that has sparked nationwide attention due to the serious nature of the charges and the large sums of public funds allegedly involved.
Oware-Mensah is facing several charges including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and abuse of public office. The allegations stem from a GH₵38.4 million scandal involving the insertion of 9,934 fictitious or “ghost” names into the NSA database between February 2022 and March 2024.
Prosecutors claim that these ghost names were used to secure a GH₵31.5 million loan from the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) under the guise of providing goods on hire-purchase to National Service personnel. However, the promised goods were allegedly never delivered, leading to what authorities describe as a major financial loss to the state.
The court is expected to resume proceedings once Oware-Mensah is certified fit to appear.
