Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) has pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), defeating eight-time champions Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC) to book a spot in the semi-finals.
The contest, held at Auditorium 900 in Accra on October 30, kept fans on edge from start to finish. PRESEC, widely regarded as favourites to defend their title, started off confidently but soon lost momentum as GSTS gained ground with precise answers and composure under pressure.
By the final round, GSTS had surged ahead, sealing their victory and sparking wild celebrations among their supporters. PRESEC fans, meanwhile, were left stunned as the defending champions exited the competition earlier than expected.
Observers praised GSTS for their teamwork and strong performance in the problem-solving and riddle segments, which proved decisive. Many described the result as a reminder of the growing competitiveness of the quiz, where no school’s dominance is guaranteed.
The win marks a historic moment for GSTS, who have long sought to reclaim their place among the quiz’s elite contenders. With confidence at an all-time high, they now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where an even tougher challenge awaits.
