A court in Accra has barred the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, from leaving the Greater Accra Region without prior notice to investigators as part of his bail conditions.
The restriction follows his alleged involvement in a violent confrontation during an anti-illegal mining operation in Hwidiem, Ahafo Region, which led to damage to property and injuries.
Mr. Addo appeared before the court on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, where he was granted bail of GH¢150,000. He is required to report to investigators every two weeks until the case is concluded or the restriction is lifted.
Prosecutors told the court that the case has assumed national attention and is now being handled by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. They argued that the MP’s position and influence could interfere with the investigation, citing videos circulating online that allegedly captured parts of the clash.
The defence team argued that Mr. Addo is presumed innocent under the law and should not be remanded. They told the court that he has a permanent residence in Accra, family responsibilities including a newborn child, and intends to fully cooperate with investigators.
The court granted bail but warned the legislator against any conduct that could obstruct the ongoing investigation. He is expected to reappear on December 1, 2025.
The charges stem from a confrontation between a youth group and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during a raid on illegal mining sites near Bronikrom–Hwidiem. Mr. Addo has denied leading or inciting any attack, explaining that he intervened only to calm tensions and prevent violence.
