The Government of Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals who arrived in Accra on December 10, 2025, in direct retaliation for what it describes as the “ill-treatment and unjustified deportation” of three Ghanaian citizens by Israeli authorities at Ben Gurion International Airport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
The reciprocal action stems from events that took place on December 7, 2025, when seven Ghanaian were detained at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport without what the government considers valid justification.
Earlier reports indicated that among those detained were four members of a Parliamentary delegation who were traveling to Tel Aviv for the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the members of the delegation were held for more than five hours before being released following diplomatic intervention, while three other Ghanaian travelers were deported back to Accra.
“Following the ill-treatment and unjustified deportation of three Ghanaian nationals by Israeli authorities, the Government of Ghana has been compelled to retaliate by deporting three (3) Israelis who arrived in Ghana earlier today,” part of the Ministry’s latest statement read.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that he had summoned the Chargé d’Affaires ad Interim of the Embassy of the State of Israel to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana was reportedly out of the jurisdiction at the time of the incident, and confirmed that “both Governments have agreed to resolve the matter amicably.”
“The Government of Ghana will continue to safeguard the dignity of its nationals and also that of other nationals,” it added, and clarified that its action represents a strong stand on diplomatic reciprocity and the treatment of its citizens abroad.
“Ghana deeply values our relations with all friendly countries and expects our citizens to be treated with dignity and respect in much the same way as other governments expect Ghana to treat their nationals,” the statement emphasized.
Meanwhile, an earlier statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry had condemned Israeli authorities’ conduct, describing the treatment of Ghanaian travelers as “inhumane and traumatic,” and alleging that Ghanaian nationals had been “deliberately targeted” for discriminatory treatment since December 7.
