Tema Port dismisses claims of operational disruption

Tema Port authorities have pushed back against claims that operations at the harbour have been disrupted, insisting that cargo handling and clearance activities are continuing as normal despite concerns raised by industry groups.

In a statement responding to recent reports, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority said Tema Port remains fully operational and capable of handling vessel traffic and cargo volumes efficiently. Management described suggestions of widespread disruption as inaccurate, stressing that systems are in place to ensure the steady movement of goods.

Port officials acknowledged that labour-related issues can occasionally affect specific processes but said contingency measures, including the use of alternative labour arrangements and operational adjustments, have prevented any shutdown or paralysis of port activities. According to the authority, vessel berthing, offloading and cargo clearance are ongoing.

The clarification comes amid warnings from sections of the import community about delays affecting food items such as rice and sugar. Tema Port management, however, maintains that these concerns do not reflect the overall operational reality at the harbour and that supply chains remain intact.

The port authority urged stakeholders and the public to rely on verified information, adding that it continues to engage with labour groups, shipping lines and importers to ensure smooth operations and protect Ghana’s trade flow.
