The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has defended the party’s decision to initiate expulsion proceedings against former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, arguing that the NPP is governed by rules which are applied equally to all individuals.
His comments follow an earlier statement from the party’s leadership, announcing the commencement of processes to expel Prof. Frimpong-Boateng for describing the party as a “fake” body that does not reflect “original NPP values.”
Reacting to these comments in an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, the NPP General Secretary explained that the party’s decision is in line with its constitution and explained that rules governing the conduct of party members are applied equally to all individuals, irrespective of positions held.
“The party is governed by laws and therefore when a person makes a statement which constitutes a misconduct, the party has to follow due process and that is what we have done as a party.
“Professor Frimpong-Boateng made a careless statement which we were not expecting from a man of his stature,” he said.
Frimpong Kodua further explained that the party views the former Minister’s comments as highly damaging to its public image, unity, and values, therefore compelling the decision to take decisive action in line with its constitution.
“Ideally, I should have written a letter to expel him from the party based on what he has said or if even he had an integrity, I would have expected that by this morning he would have written a letter to the party to have officially resigned from the party but he has not done that.
“But as a party, as I indicated, which follows due process, we have to take him through the process which is to refer to article 444 of our constitution which the national executive committee has that power to expel him from the party,” he added.
During an appearance on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday. January 12, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng stated that “the present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” adding that he does not associate with the current version of the party but the “real, virtual NPP with its members in the background.”
“Look at how they elected their last flagbearer, twist people’s arms, bribing delegates and intimidating others to get a flagbearer. This is a beginning of corruption. This should not be allowed in any serious institution or any serious party,” he stated.
He linked these internal challenges to the party’s poor performance in the December 2024 elections, arguing that the NPP had failed to properly address the issues that led to its defeat.
“We lost the elections badly and we do not deal with the issues that led to the losses and we still want to go in there and I think it will be a trainwreck if they elect the old flagbearer,” he said
These comments prompted a swift response from the party which “unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong Boateng’s unfortunate characterization of the NPP and firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary,” consequently invoking the relevant provisions of its constitution in his expulsion process.
