The New Patriotic Party (NPP), has initiated formal processes to expel former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following controversial statements he made during a television interview on Monday, January 12.
In an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, Professor Frimpong-Boateng described the NPP as a “fake party” and publicly declared that he no longer considers himself a member of the party, remarks that have triggered swift action from party leadership, who describe the comments as damaging to the party’s reputation and internal cohesion.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, Professor Boateng went further during the interview to make “additional disparaging remarks” about the party. Among his allegations, he claimed that the NPP’s 2023 Presidential Primary was rigged in favor of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who became the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
The party categorically rejected the allegations, describing them as “baseless and unsubstantiated,” emphasizing that the 2023 Presidential Primary was conducted in a “free, fair, transparent, and credible manner” and that the results faithfully reflected the will of party delegates.
“The Party unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong Boateng’s unfortunate characterization of the NPP and firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary,” part of the statement read.
The statement further noted that all candidates who participated in the primary, along with well-meaning party members, have widely acknowledged the integrity of the electoral process, describing the former Minister’s conduct and public statements as “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity, and integrity of the Party.”
“The New Patriotic Party has taken due notice of comments made by Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng and has invoked the relevant provisions of its Constitution to commence the necessary processes to expel him from the Party, strictly in accordance with due process,” the statement confirmed.
