President John Dramani Mahama, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has cut the sod for the construction of 2,000 housing units for military personnel. The project marks the first phase of a broader 10,000-unit housing scheme scheduled to be rolled out over the next five years through a partnership between the Defence Industrial Holding Company and FT Global.
The sod-cutting ceremony was held at Burma Camp in Accra during the 2025 West African Soldiers’ Social Activity (WASSA), an annual event that brings together personnel of the security services to relax, interact and strengthen camaraderie.
President Mahama noted that inadequate accommodation remains one of the most critical challenges facing the Armed Forces, with the current housing shortfall estimated at about 14,000 units. He said the government welcomed initiatives such as the Defence Industrial Holding Company–FT Global partnership, which would help reduce the long-standing deficit.
According to him, the housing project, together with the Barracks Regeneration Programme, underscores the government’s commitment to improving living conditions for service personnel and their families. He reaffirmed his resolve to ensure that the Ghana Armed Forces are adequately resourced and well positioned to serve Ghana, the sub-region, Africa and the international community with excellence. He further urged officers, soldiers and defence civilian staff to remain disciplined, professional and loyal in the discharge of their duties.
The President disclosed that he had held discussions with the Chief of Defence Staff on measures to boost the internally generated funds of the Armed Forces. He said engagements were also underway with the Ministries of Roads and Finance to allow the 48th Engineer Regiment and the Ghana Army to participate in the government’s Big Push infrastructure projects nationwide. As part of this effort, he indicated that some drip equipment acquired under the previous administration would be allocated to the 48th Engineer Regiment to support road construction and generate revenue for the military.
President Mahama commended winners of the Chief of Defence Staff Prize essay competition and expressed appreciation to the organisers, sponsors and partners whose support ensured the success of WASSA 2025.
He also congratulated Corporal Jeremy Nii Lartey for winning the World Boxing Authority (WBA) Africa Super Lightweight title, describing the achievement as a source of pride for both the Ghana Armed Forces and the nation, and commended him on his promotion.
Additionally, the President congratulated all personnel honoured at the event, with special recognition for Leading Seaman Akutor Sarah Precious of the Ghana Navy for completing a three-kilometre open-water swim to raise awareness and funds for children with special needs. He described her feat as a demonstration of courage and selflessness and congratulated her on her promotion.
