The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has formally called for the immediate cancellation of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries, following widespread allegations of vote-buying during the exercise.
In a statement dated February 8, 2026, and signed by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, the caucus said it had taken notice of reports circulating after the just-ended primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
The caucus strongly condemned the alleged acts, describing them as inconsistent with the party’s agenda to reset Ghana’s politics and restore public confidence in democratic processes.
After what it described as extensive deliberations, both the core and extended leadership of the caucus resolved to formally petition the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC with two key demands: the immediate annulment of the Ayawaso East primary, and the disqualification of any candidate found to have engaged in unethical conduct from participating in any subsequent rerun.
According to the statement, any aspirant proven to have taken part in inducement or vote-buying should be barred from contesting again once the election is cancelled.
“The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics,” the statement said.
The development adds fresh pressure on the party’s national leadership, which is already investigating allegations surrounding the controversial primary that produced Baba Jamal as winner. The call for annulment now raises the strong possibility of a rerun, as party stakeholders await further direction from the Functional Executive Committee.
