What was intended to be a showcase of athletic excellence at the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru turned chaotic on Thursday, February 19, after a clash erupted between students from two competing schools.
The confrontation is said to have involved students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS). Witnesses reported that tensions flared during the competition, eventually escalating into a physical fight between the groups.
Amid the unrest, a student from Obrachire was allegedly assaulted by several individuals believed to be affiliated with SWESBUS. The victim was reportedly beaten with sticks and pelted with stones before onlookers stepped in to restore order.
Videos circulating on social media show parts of the disturbance, capturing the injured student surrounded by a crowd during the melee. He was later transported to a medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment.
A teacher from Obrachire confirmed that the incident has been reported to the police, who have since begun investigations.
The episode adds to mounting concerns over violence at inter-school sporting competitions, coming shortly after a student was stabbed at the Eastern Regional Inter-Schools Sports Festival in Koforidua.
