Thirty-eight fishermen have been rescued after a robbery attack at sea near Senya Breku in the Central Region.
The victims, who were travelling in two locally made canoes, were safely returned to shore through a joint effort by the Marine Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The rescue mission was initiated after reports indicated that a number of fishermen had been stranded at sea following the attack. According to preliminary information, the fishermen had set out in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, for their routine fishing trip. On their way back, they were reportedly ambushed by armed men in a black boat.
The attackers allegedly fired gunshots and made away with outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the fishermen stranded in the water. The incident has heightened concerns among coastal fishing communities, where such attacks are said to be on the rise. Additional canoes believed to be connected to the attack have since been found.
At daybreak, the Ghana Armed Forces began a search operation about 35 nautical miles off the coast of Senya Breku to locate any other possible victims.
In a statement released on Thursday, February 26, the Force called for calm and assured the public that more updates would be provided in due course. Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department has started taking statements from the rescued fishermen.
