Women’s Caucus warns men against contesting female MPs in 2028 elections
The Chairperson of Parliament’s Women’s Caucus, Comfort Doyoe, has cautioned that male aspirants who run against female candidates in the 2028 general elections could be publicly “named and shamed.”
Her comments come against the backdrop of rising concern over Ghana’s poor performance in women’s political representation, with the country currently ranked 149th out of 188 nations worldwide.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, March 25, Doyoe urged key stakeholders and authorities to take intentional measures to empower women and boost their participation in governance.
“Mr Speaker, any man who contests a woman in this House in the next election will be named and shamed because we must protect them,” she stated.
She described a recent United Nations report on women’s representation as troubling, stressing that Ghana continues to trail behind many countries in promoting female inclusion in politics.
“Right Honourable Speaker, the UN report we received is quite discouraging. The countries represented by the blue line have made significant progress, while those along the golden line have done very little regarding women’s advancement,” she explained.
“Mr Speaker, Ghana ranks 149 out of 188 countries, which clearly shows we have not performed well in advancing women’s representation,” she added.
Doyoe further disclosed that the Women’s Caucus plans to engage the Speaker of Parliament to identify practical ways of supporting female MPs and improving their chances of retaining their seats.
“We will present the findings to the Speaker and discuss how best he can assist women in Parliament so they can maintain their positions,” she said.
