Three people have been confirmed dead and about 20 others hospitalised following the collapse of a building in Accra New Town, where a group had gathered for a church service.
The incident occurred on Sunday at an uncompleted structure located within a school compound, which had reportedly been repurposed as a place of worship. Eyewitnesses say the building suddenly gave way while congregants were inside, leaving several trapped under the debris.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, and the National Ambulance Service, were deployed to the scene to carry out rescue operations. Survivors were pulled from the rubble and rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka confirmed the casualties and injuries, stating that authorities are continuing rescue efforts while investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collapse.
Preliminary information suggests the building was still under construction at the time of the incident. Questions are already being raised about why the structure was occupied, particularly for a public gathering, despite its incomplete state.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as rescue operations conclude and a full assessment of the situation is completed.
