Asante Kotoko have broken their silence over a troubling stretch of form, issuing a public apology to their frustrated fanbase and pledging to bring in a substantive head coach as the Porcupines find themselves in unfamiliar territory in the Ghana Premier League standings.
The Kumasi-based giants have managed just two wins from their last eight league outings, a return that has seen them slide to sixth place on the table, a stark 10 points adrift of runaway leaders Medeama SC. The rot hit a fresh low with a humiliating 4-0 capitulation to the Tarkwa-based side, a result that laid bare the scale of the challenge facing the club.
Interim coach Prince Owusu, who stepped in following the resignation of Karim Zito, himself a man who won just once in his final six matches in charge, has been candid about the situation, describing the prospect of catching Medeama for the title as “impossible.”
Against that backdrop, the club’s board took to social media to address supporters directly, acknowledging the weight of expectation that comes with the Kotoko badge.
“We fully understand the expectations that come with representing this great club,” the club said in a statement. “The Board is actively working to appoint a competent substantive head coach whose philosophy aligns with the long-term ambitions of the club.”
“We continue to sincerely apologise for the disappointing performances in recent matches,” the statement added.
The club will now have to wait until the first week of May for their next opportunity to arrest the slide, when they face Dreams FC. Kotoko are without a fixture this week following the withdrawal of Hohoe United.
