A carpenter and a farmer from Bawkzua are in custody after a military pursuit following a street shooting led soldiers to a mosque, and a hidden cache of weapons that neither man is willing to claim.
The Accra Circuit Court One remanded Musah Aguruba and Issah Awuni on Monday after both denied charges of conspiring to possess a G3 assault rifle and live ammunition without lawful authority. They are to reappear on May 14.
The events that led to their arrest unfolded on April 27, when unknown gunmen opened fire indiscriminately in the Bawku Municipality at around 2:00 PM, sending residents scrambling. Military personnel deployed in the area for a peace enforcement operation responded to the gunshots and moved toward the scene. Upon spotting the soldiers, the suspects fled.
The chase ended at a mosque in Bawkzua, where Aguruba and Awuni were apprehended. A subsequent search of the premises uncovered one G3 assault rifle bearing serial number G3COF28516, two magazines each loaded with 20 rounds of G3 ammunition, and 176 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Nyamekye, prosecuting, told the court that both accused denied any knowledge of the weapons during interrogation, insisting they had gone to the mosque to pray and suggesting that an unknown person may have concealed the arms there before their arrival.
DSP Nyamekye said investigators are working to verify that account. Both men remain in custody as the case continues.
