A coordinated operation by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council and the Tema West Municipal Assembly has begun a three-day demolition exercise targeting illegal structures within the Golf Course area of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.
The exercise, which started on Tuesday, May 5, is part of renewed efforts to clear blocked waterways and reduce the risk of flooding as the rainy season approaches.
According to officials, widespread encroachment on major drainage routes has severely disrupted the natural flow of water, worsening flood conditions in nearby communities.
Authorities stressed that the operation is not a one-time action but part of ongoing enforcement measures aimed at protecting the environmentally sensitive Ramsar site.
Despite earlier warnings, notices, and previous demolition exercises, illegal developments have continued, leading officials to take what they describe as a stronger and more coordinated response.
The Sakumo Ramsar Site, which is of international ecological significance, has increasingly come under pressure from human activities, especially unauthorised construction.
Officials have warned that continued violations of planning regulations pose serious risks to both the environment and public safety, particularly with rising flood threats.
Security personnel have been deployed to ensure order during the exercise, while those affected are being urged to cooperate with authorities for a smooth and orderly process.
