Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has described Ghana’s Parliament as one of the most transparent legislatures in Africa, stating that it currently ranks second on the continent in terms of openness and public access.
His remarks come as Parliament continues to expand its transparency and citizen engagement efforts through improved media coverage and digital communication platforms.
Speaking at a Leadership Media Briefing on Friday, May 22, 2026, when Parliament resumed sitting, Mr. Ayariga said Ghana has made notable progress in parliamentary openness, particularly through the live broadcasting of proceedings.
“In Africa, we are one of the most open parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa, ” he said.
He also pointed out ongoing discussions about how parliaments are ranked and categorized, noting differences between unicameral and bicameral systems.
“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practise the bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he added.
Mr. Ayariga further stated that the introduction of live television coverage of parliamentary proceedings has significantly enhanced transparency and could improve Ghana’s position in future rankings.
“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he concluded.
